The Center for a New American Dream believes that Americans can get more of what really matters when we live consciously, buy wisely, and join with others to make a difference. That's why we're pleased to join stopglobalwarming.org and their dozens of partners in this virtual march to make a difference in the way Americans consume energy.
The hypercommercialized 'more is better' corruption of the American Dream has taken a heavy toll on our families, our communities, and our environment. One of the scariest ways it's impacted our planet is through our coal and oil consumption. We're four percent of the world's population and consume a quarter of its oil! By virtue of this profligate energy use, the United States has been the leading contributor to global climate change, and worse yet, we've established an unsustainable development model toward which China, India, and other large nations are aspiring.
The good news is that Americans have the power to chart a better path and begin to dramatically cut energy consumption today. By choosing public transportation, driving more fuel efficient cars, conserving energy in the home, and supporting a shift toward renewable energy and away from fossil fuels, we can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and create a safer, more stable world with abundant opportunities for our children.
Pretending we have plenty of time to act, however, will make matters worse. Making smart choices about everyday actions, while holding policymakers accountable for shifting our economy away from fossil fuels dependence will make a difference.
New American Dream offers online videos to help us appreciate the human pain that climate change is causing around the world, a Turn the Tide program of nine steps we can all take to reduce our carbon emissions, and a Green Cars Today campaign to help Americans show automakers what's personally at stake with climate change and why they need to exert greater leadership.
We are pleased to invite our fellow marchers to join us in these initiatives and we are pleased to march with you in all the steps you are taking to stop global warming.
Your fellow marcher,
