In the agrarian times of the Bible, the Israelites understood rain and
favorable weather to be signs of God's providence. After all, without a
steadily favorable climate, there would be no food. It's no wonder so many
pagan cults worshipped the weather as a god! Yet the Lord isn't just
weather, but its sovereign Creator.
But today, industrial civilization is threatening to upset this delicate
meteorological administration of God's providence. Humanity's reckless
burning of fossil fuels is already changing the patterns of the heavens, and
so also the fruitfulness of the rest of creation below. Climate change is
affecting everything from collapsing coral reef ecosystems below the sea to
melting glaciers at the top of the world. Fish, trees, and other wildlife
are left thirsty in the springtime with lower runoffs from thinner snow
packs. Farmers similarly have to get by with less water for their crops.
Fragile tidal ecosystems may be destroyed as ocean levels rise - to say
nothing of the hundreds of millions of people living in coastal towns and
Even scarier, climate change may lead to rapid "snaps" in major climate
systems such as shutting down the North Atlantic Current which keeps much of
Europe so temperate, farmable, and beautiful. If this happens, humans will
have done an unprecedented thing: we will have shut off a signature form of
God's physical providence to an entire continent.
Therefore, consistent with our commitment to the speaking out for endangered
wildlife, natural habitats, and threatened cultures, we at Restoring Eden
believe that global climate change is something which must be addressed
quickly. The facts are conclusive - humankind's burning of fossil fuels has
been a key contributor to climate change in the past 150 years. We believe
that urgent action must be taken to cut our meddling in God's providential
The time to act is now.
That's why Restoring Eden is excited to partner with the Stop Global Warming
Virtual March. We stand shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of thousands of
Americans across faith and party lines in calling for action on this
life-threatening issue. The technology and the options are there; all that
is remaining is the political will of our representatives. We can't afford
to wait any longer.
