Bob Edgar

We are called by our faith to serve and protect God's creation. The health and well being of too many people, including our children, is at stake for this to be merely a political or even just an environmental issue. Global warming crosses numerous boundaries and is as much a social, health and economic concern as it is an environmental one. Christ spent a vast portion of his ministry healing the sick and preaching about the importance of loving and caring for our neighbor. When we degrade the Earth, we also show a disregard for our neighbor. Global warming will have a disproportionately negative effect on the urban poor, children, and our elderly.

Caring for the Earth and putting an end to global warming is not a new theology. The Christian call for justice and environmental stewardship is rooted in Biblical principles. God commanded humankind to serve and protect creation and the Bible teaches us to "defend the poor and the orphan; do justice to the afflicted and the needy." By refusing to curb global warming, we have failed as a nation in our job to care for God's creation and to love our neighbor.

The National Council of Churches and its affiliated denominations are highly engaged in stopping global warming through development of worship materials for thousands of churches, involvement in the Interfaith Climate Change state campaigns, and regional climate justice training programs for clergy and lay leaders across the country. I would like to invite people of faith across the nation to join me in this march to stop global warming and to be better stewards of creation and help care for all of God's people.
