Williams, Washington D.C.

Former Mayor Anthony Williams, Washington D.C.

As Mayor of the Nation's Capital, I'm deeply concerned about the threat of global warming across our planet. Knowing and understanding the problem is a critical first step in making progress toward preventing global warming. In Washington, I recently launched a city government agency specifically designed to address our environmental needs the Department of the Environment. The agency will work with our city, regional and federal partners to address the problems facing us.

That means a focused approach on a range of critical issues, including:

Improving air quality across our city.

Improving the condition of our city's rivers and streams.

And improving our parks and open spaces for everyone in our city.

Here in Washington, our booming economic development has been a blessing for our flourishing economy. But as development surges, we see increased toxic storm water runoff that pollutes our rivers. We also see increased traffic congestion and air pollution.

A few of the things we're doing include:

New city government buildings will be "green," which means they will contribute to making our environment healthy and clean for everyone. We're also encouraging the use of "green roofs" to reduce energy consumption and improve air quality.

We have city buildings in the works that will be built to a "Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design" Silver standard.

And we've partnered with car-sharing firms Flex Car and Zip Car to increase their presence in the city.

Preventing global warming is a collective effort and we must each act in our own environments. For more information about our city's efforts, please visit "
