Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA)

Thirty five years have passed since the first Earth Day was celebrated. Its creation marks the beginning of the modern environmental movement; a force that has been the impetus for successful bipartisan action in Congress.

With the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the passing of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, the United States embarked on a long but necessary journey to preserve the health and longevity of the earth.

Today, the risks to our environment are as palpable as they were in 1970, yet the issue has unfortunately faded from political discourse. We have pulled out of the Kyoto Treaty while our counterparts in Japan and Europe have taken it seriously, each laying the foundation for genuine progress toward reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Reducing the amount of fossil fuel that is consumed will not be easy, since it essentially requires changing the underpinning of the planet's economy. However, as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment has recently shown, many of the world's ecosystems are headed for collapse unless changes are implemented. We must meet these challenges- for our earth and for future generations.
